The Summer and Winter Research Programs operate under a central UQ framework, but participating faculties, schools, institutes and centres facilitate their projects locally.

This means additional requirements may vary depending on:

• the area hosting the project
• the individual research project
• whether you are applying for Summer or Winter

For example, the Faculty of Science has additional eligibility requirements for its Summer Research Program. Science Summer projects are managed at the faculty level, while Science schools manage their Winter opportunities. Other faculties and research units use different administrative arrangements.

Always follow the instructions provided by the area hosting your chosen project, even when it is outside your enrolled faculty.

If you are interested in a particular project or want to find out more, we strongly encourage you to contact the listed supervisor. This approach also creates an opportunity for you to introduce yourself to the supervisor so they know who you are when applications are received and it will help you to听gauge whether the project is suitable for your needs.听听

UQ offers a wide range of research projects to suit many interests and disciplines.听 These are offered by Research Units that exist across UQ Faculty's, Schools, Institutes and Centres.听

You can apply for projects offered outside your enrolled faculty or school. Your degree does not need to have the same name as the project鈥檚 research area, but your knowledge, capabilities or experience must be relevant to the project.

When reviewing a project, consider:

• whether the research topic genuinely interests you
• how your studies relate to the project
• which capabilities the research requires
• what you could contribute
• what you hope to learn
• whether you can meet the location, schedule and delivery requirements

Individual supervisors may set additional selection criteria based on their project鈥檚 research needs.

These could include:

• completion of particular courses
• knowledge of a specific discipline
• laboratory or fieldwork experience
• coding, statistical or analytical capabilities
• language or communication capabilities
• availability at particular times
• capacity to attend a specified location

Read the complete project description before contacting the supervisor or submitting an application.

Once the application period has begun, you are encouraged to contact the listed supervisor if you have an informed question about the project or want to explore whether your background may be suitable.

Before contacting them:

• read the complete project description
• check the eligibility and selection criteria
• review the supervisor鈥檚 research area
• prepare a concise introduction
• identify the specific question you want answered

Contacting a supervisor allows you to explore project suitability. It does not replace the formal application process or guarantee selection.

Important: Any discussion, encouragement or indication of interest from a supervisor is informal. Selection is only formally recognised after applications have closed, the selection process has been completed and an official program outcome has been issued.

Supporting document requirements can vary between host units and projects.

You may be asked to provide:

• your UQ studies report and/or transcripts from previous university study
• a personal statement
• your resume
• other documents specified by the research unit

Your personal statement should explain:

• why the project interests you
• how your studies and experience are relevant
• what you could contribute
• what you hope to learn through the experience

You must submit the official online application form before the published deadline.

Applications cannot be accepted after the application period closes.

Before submitting, check that you have:

• selected the correct project
• met the general eligibility criteria
• met the research unit鈥檚 requirements
• addressed project-specific criteria
• uploaded all required documents
• provided accurate contact information

What happens after applications close?

All applications are considered competitively after the application period closes.

Selection may consider:

• student eligibility
• academic merit
• motivation for participating
• suitability for the project
• project-specific selection criteria
• supervisor and project availability
• available funding

Each participating research unit manages its selection process. Meeting the eligibility requirements or speaking with a supervisor does not guarantee an offer.

All applicants will receive an official outcome from the area hosting their nominated project. Students who are unsuccessful in their preferred project, will be considered for all other available projects through a universal waitlist.

You must formally accept or decline your offer through StudentHub by the deadline provided in your offer letter.

If you accept, you will be asked to provide:

• your banking details
• your postal address
• a signed UQ Unpaid Work Experience form

You should not make arrangements based on informal discussions with a supervisor. Wait until you receive and accept your official offer.

Grants

Successful participants receive:

• $3,000 for the Summer Research Program
• $2,000 for the Winter Research Program

The grant supports participation in the educational research experience. Review the Conditions of Participation for information about program commitments, grants and unpaid work experience requirements.

Support during the program

Selected students are supported through:

• a program welcome event
• local project induction
• guidance from their research supervisor or team
• research and professional skills development
• connections with researchers and postgraduate students
• opportunities to present and reflect on their learning

Students may also be invited to present their work at the annual Research Experience Showcase and provide feedback through the program evaluation.
